The Hamburg-based artist Lillemor Mahlstaedt is currently exploring gravity, flying and equilibrium by painterly means. A moment of self-oblivion, a sense of inner balance, of being light enough to fly. Precious experiences and memories that help to root people in their lives, especially when pressures build up. The protagonists are on their own in unfamiliar situations and the works express a constant tension between the figure and the experimentally colourful background.
For her edition “Ge-Wachsen” (“Grown”) Mahlstaedt slowly developed visible, enduring forms out of a process that combined drawing, painting and gluing together. A stem, a petal or a wilting leaf. The point of departure is hard to make out, and yet it guides the whole. The colour defines the atmosphere and hence what the viewer feels.
